The Grade 9 English course is a two-credit course that runs the full year. This course is meant to support young learners in strengthening their language and communication skills. Students will explore ways to enhance their written artistry, examine different points of view and respond to a wide variety of texts. This course is a 50/50 combination of Literary and Transactional components that will prepare students for their high school English journey.
Grade 10 FOUNDATIONS ENGR2F / RITR2S
Grade 10 English is a full year, two credit, foundations course that runs for two semesters. With an emphasis on the structure of language and enhancement of literacy skills, this program is designed to enhance students' basic skills with a focus on the power of language and how it affects a particular audience. Students will participate in both group and individual work environments. Prerequisite – English Grade 9 Foundations
Grade 11 COMPREHENSIVE ENGC3S
This is a one semester comprehensive course. It is a balanced approach to the study of English with 50% transactional and 50% literary materials. Students will analyze the purpose of a text, how to approach it with appropriate expectations as listeners, readers, or viewers, with an emphasis on persuasive communication. Knowing various language uses enables students to focus their efforts appropriately to create the effects they intend as speakers, writers, and producers. Prerequisite – English Grade 10 Foundations
COMPULSORY COURSES
In order for grade twelve students to fulfill the requirements for graduation, students must complete 1 compulsory course. Graduating with 2 grade twelve English credits, with an average of 80%, will exempt you from taking a compulsory writing course at University of Winnipeg, and some programs at the U of M, therefore, we recommend students choose a second OPTIONAL English credit.
Grade 12 COMPREHENSIVE ENGC4S
Our real-world experience relies on the ability to effectively and succinctly communicate with others. This course is designed to have a balanced approach (50% literary and 50% transactional) and is intended for all students in the standard English program. Course content is general in nature and will cover a variety of written texts and formats. Prerequisite –English Grade 11 or EALR4S
Grade 12 LITERARY ENGL4S - The art of language
This course is designed for those students who enjoy working with traditional literature including novels, drama, short stories and poetry. Non-fiction material is included. (70% literary and 30% transactional) Prerequisite – English Grade 11 or EALR4S
Grade 12 TRANSACTIONAL ENGT4S - The function of language
The emphasis of this course is on non-fictional pragmatic materials that enhance critical thinking and supports real-world communication. An emphasis on relevant social issues enables students to focus their efforts appropriately to create the effects they intend as speakers, writers, and producers. (30% literary and 70% transactional) Prerequisite – English Grade 11 or EALR4S

Grade 12 FILM AND MEDIA STUDIES ENLS4S
This course will immerse students in today’s most exciting literary form---the Film! Students will:
study film history and development
enjoy and analyze cinematic techniques in an array of iconic films through guided viewing and writing exercises
learn how to prepare a formal film analysis paper on par with that of a first-year university Film Studies student
be given the theoretical and practical tools to create, direct, and screen their own film.
Suitable for ALL students but most especially for those who are creative, analytical, and university or college bound. Of particular benefit for those headed for the faculties of English, Media Studies, Performing Arts, Education, or Video Production. Prerequisite: Grade 11 English
Grade 12 CREATIVE COMMUNICATIONS ENTS4S
Students enrolled in this course will find, evaluate and create various forms of digital literacy and contemporary media. This course emphasizes the creative communication processes found in the work environment with an emphasis on collaboration and teamwork. Students will learn the nuances of community advocacy while they construct, and implement a community-based campaign for our DMCI students, and for the community at large. In this major independent project, students will be intensely engaged in the creation, development and completion of their campaign. Prerequisite: Grade 11 English
